POYNTON 3
BROADHEATH CENTRAL 2

THE MATCH

Saturday gave Poynton the opportunity to bounce back after a very disappointing mid week result at Crewe with a home game against newly promoted Broadheath Central.

Poynton were missing eight first team players but still fielded a very strong team with Simpson, Wright, Morris, Leach, Garvey, McCurrie and Graham coming into the starting line-up.

Poynton started on the front foot and after 10 minutes of heavy pressure, captain James Manson caught the Broadheath midfielder on the ball to go one one one with the opposition goalkeeper and neatly passed the ball into the back of the net.

Poynton were dominating the game, but despite the controlling the possession they couldn’t find a way past the visitors defence as the half finished with just the one goal.

Immediately after half time it was 2-0, a perfect cross from Marcus Graham found Carl McCurrie to head the ball into the bottom corner.

It was soon three when Greg Mathers broke the offside trap and rolled the ball under the on rushing keeper.

Seemingly in full control, Broadheath got themselves back in the game when the Poynton defence switched off to allow Broadheath substitute Gareth Steel to knock it pass debutant Ell Simpson in the Poynton goal.

Unbelievably it was soon to be 3-2 when a long ball was not dealt with and the Broadheath striker Steel pounced for his second of the game.

With 15 minutes to go, Broadheath we’re down to 10 men when an awful tackle of Ryan Stewart saw the referee produced a straight red for goalscoring hero Steel.

The game fizzled out and Poynton claimed all 3 points.

THE GAFFER

“It was a tough game but we should have managed it so much better, I couldn’t see them scoring after our third went in but full credit to them, they never game up. It was a very hot afternoon and the lads coped well as we demand a lot. It was great to get Jay Burgess and Sam Morris back as well so everything considered I’m very pleased.”
