MATCH REPORT

Poynton travelled to Knutsford on Saturday to face full time outfit Egerton FC who boast a number of ex professional league players and who are managed by ex Bolton midfielder, Nathan Ellington.

Poynton knew full well the importance of this game with Egerton sitting three points better off prior to kick off; a win for the home team would see a big 6 point gap open.

Poynton gave a first start to Carl McCurrie who had been signed from local rivals Congleton Vale. Manger Andrew Hurst and his assistants had set the team up in a 3-5-2 formation, something which hasn’t been tried this season.

Regardless of Egerton having the luxury of training every day, Poynton started the much better team with a passion and desire running through all the players. After 10 minutes, Poynton took a well deserved lead – a fantastic team goal, finished with a delightful through ball from skipper Jake Wright to find the debutant Carl McCurrie just inside the box who finished superbly well to open his Poynton account.

Within 2 minutes it was 2-0, Greg Mathers, another signing from AFC Macclesfield, who was starting only his second game of the season after an injury, found himself on the score sheet. Mathers found himself one on one, kept his composure and audaciously lopped the on rushing Egerton keeper to find the back of the net.

5 minutes later, it was 3-0; A perfect delivery from midfielder Chris Allen found defender Sam Morris who claimed his third of the campaign.

Seemly going in on top at half time, Egerton pulled one back from a corner – a laps in concentration meant the half time team talk wasn’t going to be as positive.

HT: Egerton 1 Poynton 3

Egerton shuffled their pack at half time and got a foot hold in the game, Poynton remained firm and nullified any Egerton attack.

On the hour mark, Poynton put the game to bed, Mathers and McCurrie combined once again with McCurrie escaping the offside trap to find himself in front of goal, unselfishly squaring the ball to him strike partner Mathers to tap the ball into the empty net.

Egerton clearly shell shocked with the afternoons proceedings, got a little nasty with 2 players being sent off in the last 10 minutes of the game.

The result sees Poynton back in the title hunt with next Saturdays game vs Pilkingon proving very important.
