MATCH REPORT

Poynton first team travelled to the Billinge Sports Centre hoping to follow up from last weeks Stockport  Cup Quarter Final win.

Poynton were missing several first team regulars with Challinor, Manson and Leach all unavailable. However, new signing Jonny Cavanagh was given his first start for the club.

The first half was all Poynton with Toole looking at his absolute best. Missed opportunities cost Poynton dearly and a break away goal from Billinge gave the home side a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Cavanagh was forced to be withdrawn at halftime with a back injury and was replaced by Kennerley.

The second half was a far more even contest with Poynton struggling to click into the same gear as the first half and Billinge fighting hard to hold on to their lead.

Poynton’s main threat all game was down their right hand side through Wright and Toole and it was the great work from Wright that pulled Poynton level. Wright picked up possession just inside the Billinge half, played a one-two and struck a left footed shot into the far bottom corner, 1-1.

Poynton now had all the momentum and when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Mccurrie with 15 minutes to go, it looked like there would only be one winner.

Burgess stepped up for the penalty, sent the keeper the wrong way but the ball hit the foot of the post. Burgess fired home the rebound but the referee correctly ruled out the goal as the ball hadn’t touched another player before his second attempt.

The penalty miss turned the game on its head. Poynton clearly deflated were clinically punished by Billinge as they scored 2 late goals to win the game 3-1.
