POYNTON 4

THE MATCH
Last night saw Poynton FC kick off their 2019-2020 campaign with a trip to Egerton FC. Poynton named a number of debutants within a very youthful squad.
Poynton FC started off slowly and couldn’t really find their tempo – which caused them to  sit a little deep and invite too much pressure. 10 minutes in and Egerton’s pressure paid off, a cross came on from the right, Jake O’Regan mishandled the ball which fell to the feet of the Egerton front man and heplace the ball beyond the Poynton goalkeeper.
This sparked a reaction from Poynton and in the 20th minute Greg Mathers was fouled on the edge of the box, Jonny Cavanagh stepped up and placed the ball into the top corner, 1-1 at half time.
After a slight tactical change at half time by the Poynton management allowed a more attacking approach to highlight what was believed to be Egerton weaknesses and within 10 minutes Poynton took the lead – Marcus Graham found Max Dickov and the opposite flank who found Greg Mathers on the penalty spot to smash the ball beyond the Egerton goalkeeper.
Manager Ed Haslam brought Sam Dickov on with 25 minutes remaining on the clock and instantly made an impact, Dickov was brought down in the box, the referee with no hesitation pointed to the spot, Dickov picked himself up and made it 1-3.
With Poyton in full control the final goal came in the last minute with Dan Quinn delivering a free kick in from the right to find Marcus Graham to tap the ball home on his full first team debut.
THE GAFFER
I’m delighted, our first half performance was slightly disappointing but that second half performance in particular was fantastic, Jake didn’t have a save to make and a lot of that was down to Luke and Adam at the back, they were outstanding – either one could have been given man of the match but I think Adam just sneaked it.
The boys have given me more selection issues as the lads who came out were brilliant and we had lads who were left out the squad all together who I know are desperate to show us what they can do.
