Saturday 19th January 2019, 2pm kick off – Knutsford Football Club

West 80

Mathers 10
Toole 44

Saturday saw Poynton travel to reigning Cheshire League Champions Knutsford, to face a side in fantastic form and containing three former Poynton players in their starting line-up.

Poynton, also in great form, were looking to make it three wins on the bounce to remain in contention for the title.

The game started at a fast pace and Poynton started to dictate play but never really creating an clear cut chances until the 10th minute when Greg Mathers found himself in the opposition box, faked one way and put the ball on to his weaker right foot then superbly placed the ball into the bottom corner, 0–1.

Poynton grew even more in confidence and should have made it 2-0 when Jay Burgess found himself with time on the penalty spot but unbelievable steered the ball wide.

It was looking like the visitors were going in at half time with a 1-0 lead until Matt Toole danced his way through the Knutsford defence to smash the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0 at the break.

HT: Knutsford 0 Poynton 2

After the break Knutsford came out fighting and clearly wanted to get back in this game but as much as they tried, our defence remained strong and it remained 2-0. Youngster Luke Jones again impressing along with Sam Morris, Paul Garvey and skipper Jake Wright. The Poynton defence has now conceded just four goals in the last five games.

Manson was in fine form in the midfield and was man of the match following another impressive display.

In the 80th minute Knutsford were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, the substitute West stepped up and brilliantly beat Jake O’Regan to set the game up for a tense final ten minutes.

Two minutes later and unsavoury incident occurred, the Knutsford player went into to a challenge leading with both feet, players started to gather from both sides when Jake O’Regan was head butted by  Kallum McDonough who was shown a straight red card.

Poynton managed the final minutes well to claim a well deserved three points and with Altrincham Reserves dropping more points the gap is now down to just 6 points.
