Poynton have confirmed the appointment of Andy Williams as the new 1st Team Assistant Manager.

Williams will become part of manager Jon Hudson’s new look backroom team ahead of the new Cheshire League 2020/21 season.

After coming through the junior set up at Grove United JFC. Willow stepped up to the Grove 2nd team as a 17 year old. He made his debut for the 1st team in the final day of the 94-95 season against Barnton FC.

Throughout the following season he made a number appearance’s in the 1st team, most notebly FA Vase games against Pontefract, Kidsgrove and Bootle.

By the following season Andy has established himself as a regular 1st team player, normally playing in the midfield as a right or left wingback, scoring against Vauxhall Motors in a epic Cheshire Cup tie that season, while playing as a number 10.

He was apart of the Grove team that went onto to win the Stockport Senior Cup in 1999/2000, and then in the losing team the following seasons final versus Poynton.

By the 2002/2003 season Andy had moved on to another local club Stockport Georgians.

Again while at Georgians he went onto win the Stockport Senior Cup in 2003 scoring in the final in a 3-1 win against Mellor FC.

He moved onto Hazel Grove FC in 2006, where he enjoyed 4 seasons playing in the Lancashire & Cheshire League. Although this period didn’t bring any silverware, it’s fondly remembered as being a great time mainly due to the wonderful team spirit and good friends he made while at this club.

Andy also played for a number of Sunday League team during a 17 year period including Devonshire Park, Real Reform, Stockport County Supporters Club, Great Moor FC and Offerton Green.

Williams started coaching after leaving school, and while at College worked with Stockport County in the Community, this helped him to quickly attain his coaching certificates.

From 1997 to 2000 he studied Sport Science at Staffordshire University, opening up the opportunity of gaining more valuable experience in the coaching environment. During this period he worked the Lady’s Football Team, helping to coach them to 2 Cup Finals wins.

During the summer of 1999 and 2000, Andy coached in the U.S. working with a variety of different levels of players, from mini football to High School level (boys and girls).

Since October 2000, Andy has been working for a private coaching company and helped develop players such as Josh Harrop (Man United & Preston) and Duncan Watmore (Sunderland & England U21).

In 2015 Andy achieved his FA Youth Licence to go alongside the other coaching awards previously gained throughout his 25years of coaching, he has also previously been a scout for Manchester City FC.
