Saturday 29th December, 2pm kick off – Poynton Sports Club

Poynton first team hosted Cheshire league champions Knutsford on Saturday in their final game of 2018.

Poynton were forced to make 4 changes to the starting 11 from their previous game at Malpas. Oakes, Jackson, Jones and Hurst replacing Challinor, Quinn, Hough and McCurrie.

On the sticky playing surface, Poynton started the game well, early balls in behind the Knutsford defence for Hurst and Mathers were creating early opportunities for the home side.

As to be expected, Knutsford looked to get the ball down and play neat and tidy 2 touch football. The impressive Luke Jones making his first start for Poynton first team along side Morris and Garvey minimised Knutsford’s goal threat. Knutsford’s best opportunity was saved brilliantly by Ward as the ball appeared to have looped over him.

The first notable chance for Poynton came when Hurst broke down the left to pull back for Mathers who didn’t get the required contact on the strike and the ex Poynton keeper, Callum Spencer saved comfortably.

Minutes later Mathers hit a first time ball for Hurst to run onto. As he knocked the ball past Spencer on the edge of the box, he was caught by the keeper who escaped with just a yellow card. Mathers curled the resulting free kick wife of the post.

The breakthrough for the home side eventually came when Toole picked up the ball from the right, ran inside and slotted the ball through to Hurst who placed his first time shot into the far corner from 8 yards. 1-0.

Poynton continued to have most of the ball going into halftime but with Knutsford looking a threat on the break it was setup for a tight second half.

HT: Poynton 1 Knutsford 0

The second half started slow for Poynton. Knutsford came out fast and had a lot of possession inside the Poynton half.

Pressure told in the end and with 20 minutes remaining Jackson broke free for the visitors, fired low and the ball squirmed under Ward into the bottom corner. 1-1.

Following the goal, Poynton sprung back into life and Toole broke free down the left. As he cut back onto his favoured foot, he was brought down just outside the penalty area but the referee awarded a penalty to Poynton! Mathers stepped up to clinch he points late on but his powerful strike rattled the cross bar to keep the score level.

Poynton had a late push for the winner but it wasn’t to be and the points were shared.

Luke Jones

Excellent first start for the first team. Deserved his opportunity after impressing for the Reserves over the past 2 seasons.
