CHESHIRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
WHALEY BRIDGE 2
TUESDAY 13TH AUGUST 2019, 6:45PM KICK OFF
Substitute Carl McCurrie grabbed a 89th minute equaliser to earn Poynton a deserved point against Whaley Bridge last night in the first home game of the new season.
It was a real Jekyll and Hyde performance from the home side, rallying with a dominant second half performance after a dreadful opening 45 minutes.
After a summer of improvements on and off the pitch the new look London Road playing surface looked splendid in the August sunshine. Visitors Whaley Bridge playing their first game of the new season after their own off field problems thanks to the great British summer.
Manager Ed Haslam was handed a real headache before the game with Hough & Wright both missing and Quinn unable to start to Stewart & Garvey came into the team that beat Egerton a week earlier and a tactical reshuffle was needed.
Poynton started brightly but the visitors created the first chance but failed to test O’Regan.
On 21 minutes the visitors went ahead and it was local lad Sam Leadbetter who gave them the lead. He rose, unmarked only to see his header brilliantly saved by O’Regan – but the striker reacted quickly and poked the rebound home.
The home couldn’t react, too many long balls and errors allowed Whaley to dominate the game, Sutton and Walley winning the midfield battles.
On 39 minutes the lead was doubled. Jones punished for an aggressive tackle, which saw the young defender shown a yellow card and from the resulting free kick the ball was curled past O’Regan into the back of the net.
Poynton needed a reaction. Quinn replaced Graham, which moved Cavanagh back into the midfield and the home side started to play more football.
Just past the hour mark Poynton got themselves back in the game. Max Dickov with a great run down the right hand side and he fired in a great cross which was turned into his own net by the helpless Whaley defender.
Sam Dickov and Carl McCurrie were introduced and Poynton now had the momentum but some stubborn Whaley defending looked to have earned the points but the pressure finally told.
Max Dickov was fouled in the box and Carl McCurrie held his nerve to fire past the keeper and earn Poynton a point that their second half display deserved.
A real game of two halves, both sides will feel they could have won the game.
If I’m bring blunt and totally honest, we were simply no way near good enough in the first half, we played into Whaleys hands, we knew they’d be direct and physical – we changed our style for no reason.
Myself and Cowley made it very clear at half time what we expected, Greg didn’t get any service, our wide men didn’t get beyond enough, we didn’t control midfield… that all changed second half, the lads were miles better and regardless of scoring in the lads minutes we feel it’s two points dropped.
