Saturday saw Poynton First Team attempt to finish the day top of the Cheshire Premier League if they beat Malpas and Billinge lost at home to Daten.
Regardless of Malpas’ league position, Poynton knew this wasn’t going to be easy; Malpas came off a great result against Altrincham Reserves last week.
From the outset, Poynton set the pace and took full control. Malpas had a clear game plan to frustrate Poynton by sitting very deep in an attempt to hit them on the break.
After 20 minutes, Jamie Manson went into a tackle and came out complaining he couldn’t see out of one eye, after a quick medical assessment it was clear Manson needed further treatment and was rushed to hospital – Andy Oaks replaced Mason in the midfield.
Poynton couldn’t find a break through with Greg Mathers having the best chance but was denied by a stunning save from the Malpas keeper; Poynton continued to press but with no luck.

Immediately after the break, Poynton were caught napping and the Malpas striker went one on one with the Poynton goalkeeper, Si Niocols but Nicols stood up tall and made a very smart save.
Within 5 minutes of the restart the game, Poynton we’re back on top but couldn’t find a break through, this remained the same until the 82nd minute. Matt Toole found some space on the right hand side and delivered a floated ball into the box, substitute Jay Burgess lost his marker and generated all the pace of the ball to break the deadlock and put Poynton 1-0 up.
Two minutes later, Burgess could have put the game to bed but unfortunately fired wide.
The final whistle went and Poynton warned a hard fought 3 points; Billinge went down 3-2 to Daten which which meant Poynton finished joint top of the table with Billinge with the exact same points and goal difference.
