Poynton suffered a disappointing home defeat to Altrincham reserves in a top of the table clash at London Road.
Hurst made one enforced change to the starting 11, bringing in Allen to replace Bowey who starred in the victory over Padgate in midweek. As expected, Altrincham fielded a young energetic side along with first team central defender, Ben Harrison who was looking to get match fitness after his return from injury.
Poynton started the game brilliantly creating a number of early opportunities but in the final 3rd , Poynton were wasteful, which went on to cost them dearly. The most notable early chance came after a good work from Faulkner to fire across goal to find Black who headed over from 3 yards. Soon after, Black raced through on goal, only to drag his shot wide of the far post. The third chance came from a well delivered corner from Allen, which fell to Morris who headed well into the corner but Jones in the Altrincham goal, reacted sharply to save to his left hand side.
Poynton continued to put the pressure on and Black once again got in behind the defence, through on goal. As he delayed getting his shot off, Jones got a hand to the ball but could only push it out to Simpson who fired into the corner only for the defender, Harrison, to stick out a hand to push the ball away. Poynton penalty and Harrison sent off for deliberate handball. Surely, this was now setup for a Poynton win…………
Simpson stepped up, struck low to Jones’ left bottom corner but the keeper superbly saved and the momentum of the game swung in that one moment as Altrincham although down to 10 men had something to fight for.
Things quickly got worse for Poynton as one badly defended breakaway goal (Downing) closely followed by a second (Westall) took the visitors into a 2 goal lead at halftime.

Poynton came out pushing for the early goal hoping momentum would swing back in their favour but it was Altrincham who looked the brighter side with Poynton looking like the side with the 10 men.
Changes were made with Astbury replacing Simpson and Wright replacing Garvey who had strained his hamstring. As the second half went on, any remaining belief appeared to have drained from the Poynton players and it was clear there was only going to be one winner.
Poynton were finished off when the ball was clipped in behind the back 4, Jake Wright made a last ditch attempt to win the ball but took out the Altrincham forward as he went to shoot, penalty given. Wright escaped a red card and Swift stepped up to clinch the victory to complete a dismal afternoon for Poynton.
Poynton have a great chance to bounce back with another home fixture against Denton this Tuesday night, 6.30pm kick off.
