Match Report

Poynton backed up their midweek victory with a convincing 4-0 win away at newly promoted Pilkington FC in St Helens on Saturday.

Hurst made 3 changes to the starting eleven, the vastly experienced Nick Ward replaced O’Regan in goal who picked up and injury in midweek.  First starts were given to Ryan Stewart (centre midfield) and Tom Bowey (right wing) who both impressed in the second half of the win at Congleton.

Poynton were delighted to see in form Rob Black pass a pre-match fitness test after taking some heavy knocks in the previous game.  Images of the injury were trending on snapchat late on Wednesday evening….

Much was expected of Pilkington in the lead up to the game but it was Poynton who made a fast start playing on the front foot and looking to press at every opportunity leading to some sloppy defending from the home side.  After having the better of the early stages, Poynton had to be patient to wait for the breakthrough.  Poynton looked a threat out wide with Bowey and Black always looking to get their fullbacks faced up and the opening goal once again, came down Poynton’s left side through Black.  He beat his marker in the left channel to get to the by-line and then pulled the ball back for the oncoming Andy Oakes to fire home from an angle, 0-1.

Pilkington reacted to the early pressure and always looked dangerous on the break through Taylor and Sephton, however, Poynton’s back 4 looked a solid unit, marshalled by Garvey, complimented with centre half partner Morris and ball playing fullbacks Quinn and Wright.  A couple of breaks in behind the Poynton defence lead to early crosses into the box but Ward commanded his box brilliant to quickly relieve any signs of pressure.

Poynton lost centre forward, Simpson to injury just before halftime being replaced by goal hungry Faulkner and the second half started with Poynton back on top always looking to release Black and Bowey into the channels between the Pilkington fullbacks and centre halves. And the second goal came from that tactic.  Faulkner completed some great hold up play, turned his marker and slotted the ball into Bowey’s path who then calmly took a touch and then fired under the keeper into the bottom left hand corner, 0-2.

From then on, Poynton took the game to the home side and they didn’t have to wait long for the 3rd.  Rob Black picked up the ball in the left channel, rode 2 challenges and then placed a ball into the far corner of the net from 20 yards to score his second goal in as many games.

Chris Allen, returning for his second spell at the club, replaced Manson who was suffering after a heavy collision with the Pilkington keeper.  Allen made an early impact picking up the ball in a central position to clip the ball in behind the Pilkington back 4 into the path of Faulkner who steadied himself to then slot home underneath the keeper for his first goal of the season.  0-4.

Pilkington didn’t allow their heads to drop and continued to push for a consolation goal but Poynton managed the game well and secured back to back wins giving them confidence going into the away trip to league leaders Padgate this Tuesday night.
