Poynton leapfrogged Tuesday night’s opponents Greenalls Padgate to move into second place after a third straight victory in just 6 days.
Poynton made one change to Saturday’s starting eleven, bringing in Faulkner to replace Simpson, who had picked up a slight groin strain in the victory at Pilkington. Hurst also added forward Burgess to the squad to make up a strong looking bench along side Simpson and Allen.
The opening 20 minutes were cagey with neither side creating too many opportunities. Poynton looked to exploit the large pitch attempting to use their wide men of Bowey and Black in the channels but Greenalls stood up well to the threat with some tight defending and tough tackles on the inform wingers.
Poynton looked to increase the tempo and began to get on top of the game and the breakthrough came via the BB combination. Bowey picked up the ball just inside the Poynton half and played an inch perfect through ball to Black who had timed his run perfectly to beat the offside trap. As Black raced through on goal, Bowey followed his pass into the box to offer the square ball and Black unselfishly tried to play him in only for the defender to stick an outstretched leg onto the ball and turn it into his own net. 0-1.
Poynton closed off the half by creating several more opportunities but the impressive Greenalls keeper kept out attempts from Faulkner, Black and Quinn.
HT: Greenalls 0 Poynton 1
The second half started with a feeling that if Poynton could get another goal, the floodgates would open but once again Greenalls stood firm to the pressure. Within 15 minutes of the 2nd half, Poynton introduced Allen for Stewart who was suffering with a knee problem and Burgess for holding midfielder Oakes.
Both substitutes made an impact on the game allowing Poynton to continue probing the Greenalls back line. It was the creative spark from Allen, which created the 2nd goal, finding Black in the right channel who hit an early strike towards the far corner, which was saved well but Faulkner was sharp to follow in to head home the rebound for his second goal in two games. 0-2.
Simpson came on for Manson in a like for like role who once again had run himself into the ground and the last 15 minutes was all Poynton, the front 4 of Bowey, Faulkner, Black and Burgess all linking up brilliantly to create a number of chances, which were either squandered or saved well by the Greenalls number 1.
The Poynton back 4 with Ward behind them were solid all night, building the play from the back and the team closed out the game well to clinch the 3 points and a second consecutive clean sheet.
Another big game awaits on Saturday when Poynton host Altrincham Reserves who are level with Poynton with 9 out of a possible 12 points.
