EAGLE SPORTS 2
Poynton took a depleted squad to Warrington on Saturday to face Eagle Sports in the Cheshire League.
A tough encounter was made even harder for Poynton when goalkeeper Jake O’Regan declared himself unfit before the warm up. Ward stepped in leaving the Poynton management team with minimal options from the bench, which in the end proved costly.
Poynton made a positive start against a strong wind and opened the scoring through Mathers after good wing play from Quinn.
Eagle equalised shortly afterwards and the teams went in at half time all square.
With the wind at their backs, Poynton now looked favourites to go on and win the game.
Unfortunately the game turned quickly on a mistake from an official. In the space of 5 minutes, the linesman gave 2 of the strangest offside decisions you’ll see. Firstly he gave offside against the Eagle right winger who was clearly on side and moments later he didn’t flag when Eagle’s Chris Quirk stood 5 yards offside and ran onto finish clinically past Ward. 2-1.
Poynton rallied and gave everything they had but Eagle battled and defended well. A succession of corners and free kicks couldn’t find the goal Poynton needed and Eagle held on to all 3 points.
Poynton will have far better days and full credit to Eagle, who took their chances well and defended bravely right to the death.
