Saturday saw Poynton travel to face top of the table side, Altrincham Reserves. Poynton knew that only a win would keep them in the title race.

The first half was extremely cagey with both teams not ready to take any risks but the best chances fell to the home side with Nick Ward pulling off two fantastic saves to keep the tie level.

The second half started a lot more open with both teams knowing that a draw wasn’t good enough – in the 60th minute, Altrincham found the vital first goal, a scramble in box found the Altrincham front man who Ben Elliott, who found the roof of the net.

Poynton pushed on to try and bring the game level with the best chances falling to Greg Mathers but the Poynton striker couldn’t beat the impressive Altrincham goalkeeper.

In the final minutes Jason Leach struck the base of the post but unfortunately regardless of the constant pressure, Poynton couldn’t find a bit of fortune they were looking for.

The fixture saw two inform teams go toe to toe in what was a fantastic advert for the Cheshire League.
